About us

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., founded on January 5, 1911 on the campus of Indiana University, is the premiere predominately African American Greek Letter Organization, comprised of over 120,000 men. The Evergreen Park Alumni Chapter received its charter on August 27, 1993.

Robert L Braswell was initiated at the Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc on the campus of the University of Illinois in the Spring of 1969. Brother Braswell played an important role in the early days of the Evergreen Park Alumni chapter.

Brother Braswell made many significant contributions to the Fraternity, but is perhaps best remembered for being the driving force behind the development, design and implementation of the Kappa Alpha Psi license plate program in the State of Illinois. After several years of negotiations with the Illinois Secretary of State, the first “Kappa” plates were distributed on May19, 2007 at Lincoln Mall in Matteson, Illinois. The license plate fees collected each year from these plates provide scholarship money for high school seniors throughout the Greater Chicago area.

The next time you see a “Kappa” license plate in Illinois, think of Brother Braswell. His legacy will live forever.

Brother Braswell made his transition in 2008. We’re honored to name our foundation in his memory.

The Evergreen Park Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. awarded it's first scholarship in 2012. The Robert L. Braswell Foundation was founded in late 2015 as the philanthropic arm of the chapter. The foundation is a non-profit, tax exempt publicly supported organization as described in Section 501 (C) 3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

Mission

Our mission is to bring systemic changes to improve the outcomes and lives of the young and underserved, particularly in Chicago and its southern suburbs by providing mentoring and college scholarships to deserving high school students, as well as community service in the form of food distribution, domestic violence awareness training, financial literacy and other community outreach initiatives.

We recognize that the issues facing our youth can only be solved by forming alliances with other like-minded organizations with community support along with an unswerving commitment to building a better community for all.

Vision

The Robert L. Braswell Foundation and its supporters see the state of our community not as one of dispar, but one of immense opportunity. We recognize the potential and talent of our youth. Our goal is to positively effect our youth, particularly young men, and the raise the overall state of our community, one person at a time.
